OstStern Wohnen Ost
Frankfurt am Main
The city of Frankfurt did not want loud “look-at-me” architecture for the district. What was desired was a retro architecture that incorporates the shapes, colors and materials of the distinctive office buildings that emerged in the 1920s, among others in German Hanseatic cities.
Instead of a residential block, we designed an ensemble of four houses. Through the chosen design principles, including recessed entrance areas, structured base zones, façade setbacks, and stepped floors as positive and negative forms, the ensemble appears small-scale while still retaining its urban character. Also characteristic of our design are the heterogeneous façade typologies, shaped by different stylistic devices, materials and colors. With the compact courtyard and the public neighborhood square right on the doorstep, the ensemble offers attractive meeting points for residents. The apartments are protected towards the courtyard by a continuous balcony band with slats. The band serves both as a privacy screen and for shading.
